Why UP's Engineering Students Struggle to Find Quality Internships — And How Technology Can Fix It

India has over 827 engineering colleges in Uttar Pradesh alone, affiliated to Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU) — one of the largest technical universities in Asia. Every year, lakhs of B.Tech students from these institutions complete their academic coursework, appear for exams, and eventually step into a job market that increasingly demands one thing above all else: practical experience.
Yet the cruel irony is this — the very students who need internship experience the most are the ones who have the least access to it.
The Gap Is Real — and It Is Large
Walk into the Training and Placement cell of any mid-tier engineering college in Lucknow, Bareilly, Gorakhpur, or Jhansi, and you will find the same story repeating itself. The TPO has a list of companies. Some of them visited last year. Some did not come back. Students scramble to find summer training on their own — often settling for a certificate from a local institute that holds little weight with actual employers.
Meanwhile, students at IITs and NITs are completing internships at Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, and ISRO — building their CVs, their networks, and their confidence — while still in their second year of college.
This is not a talent gap. It is an access gap.
Why Does This Happen?
The reasons are structural. Most internship platforms in India — Internshala, Unstop, LinkedIn — are designed around metro cities and metro companies. Their algorithms, their listings, their entire user experience assumes that the student is in Bengaluru, Delhi, or Pune. A student from Azamgarh or Sitapur does not fit their model.
At the same time, companies looking for intern talent rarely think beyond Tier 1 cities. They post on platforms where metro students are most active. The result is a self-reinforcing cycle — UP students don't get internships, so they don't build experience, so they don't get hired, so they conclude that engineering was a mistake.
It was not a mistake. The system failed them.
What Technology Can Do
The solution is not charity — it is infrastructure. What UP's engineering students need is a platform built specifically for them: one that understands AKTU's academic calendar, knows which branches need summer training in which semester, speaks their language, and connects them with companies willing to hire from Tier 2–3 colleges.
Technology can do this at scale. An AI-powered matching system can connect a second-year CSE student in Kanpur with a verified IT internship that matches her skills, her availability window, and her career goals — in minutes, not months. A digital CV builder can help a student from a small town present himself as confidently as a student from a premier college. A skill certification platform can give him credentials that companies actually recognise.
This is precisely the problem that Yogsanskriti Pvt. Ltd. is building to solve — from Ayodhya, for every engineering student in UP.
The Opportunity Ahead
India's engineering talent is not concentrated in its metros. It is distributed across every district of every state. UP alone produces hundreds of thousands of engineering graduates every year. If even a fraction of them had access to quality internships and skill development, the economic impact — on individuals, on families, on the state — would be transformative.
The technology exists. The students exist. What has been missing is a platform that brings them together. That platform is being built — and it is being built where it matters most.
Yogsanskriti Pvt. Ltd. is an Ayodhya-based IT and EdTech company developing a technology platform for engineering students across Uttar Pradesh — connecting them with verified internships, skill training, and college counseling.
